Design changes unveiled for Lincoln penny

WASHINGTON - Next year, the penny will be getting not just one new look but four of them, the first changes to the 1-cent coin in 50 years. The U.S. Mint unveiled the new designs during a ceremony Monday at the Lincoln Memorial. The coin changes are part of the government's commemoration next year of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

Lincoln's profile will reman on one side of the coin but the Lincoln Memorial will be replaced on the other side by the new images, with a different one being introduced every three months.
The first new design will depict a log cabin, representing the place in Kentucky where Lincoln was born in 1809.
The second design will feature a young Lincoln taking a break from working as a rail splitter in Indiana by reading a book. Lincoln as a young lawyer standing in front of the old state capitol building in Springfield, Ill., will be the design on the third coin.
The final coin in the series will show the half-completed Capitol dome, evoking Lincoln's famous order that construction of the Capitol should continue during the Civil War as a symbol that the Union would continue.
The first new penny is scheduled to go into circulation starting on Feb. 12, Lincoln's birthday, and then every three months after that.
The changing designs mark another effort by the Mint to duplicate the success of the 50-state quarter program, the most popular coin collecting program in U.S. history. The nickel also had changing designs to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition and the Mint has embarked on an effort to revive interest in a $1 coin by introducing four new designs each year honoring a different president.
Under the law that authorized the design changes for the Lincoln penny, after 2009 the "tails" side of the coin will be changed to feature "an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single and united country." That image has not been chosen yet.
Lincoln's image was added to the penny in 1909 when the nation was celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth and the Lincoln Memorial was added to the other side of the coin in 1959 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 16th president's birth.

Los Angeles (E! Online) - There are two things most people remember about the Beverly Hills Cop movies: Eddie Murphy as Detective Axel Foley and the flick's Grammy-winning theme song.
Well, when Beverly Hills Cop IV goes into production, director Brett Ratner promises both will be back.
"It's a whole new interpretation," Ratner tells me.
Composer-producer Harold Faltermeyer's synth-pop theme will get an update, but not too much. "Why change that song?" Ratner says. ADVERTISEMENT
He goes so far as to say that one of the "biggest problems" with director Michael Mann's movie adaptation of Miami Vice with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in 2006 was the missing iconic theme song.
"I said to [Mann], 'Why didn't you have it?' " Ratner says. "He said, 'We're doing something new.' That's like doing Mission Impossible without the theme song."
Production on BHC IV will reportedly begin next year with a 2010 release date, or 25 years after the first installment of the franchise.
Ratner is also busy putting together a DVD about the music videos he's directed for people like Madonna, Jessica Simpson and Miley Cyrus, to name a few. "They're interviewing all the singers I've worked with," Ratner says. "I'm worried."

Theatre - BRONXTALE in LA - September 23-October 19.
Chazz Palminteri's one-man show A Bronx Tale will play the Wadsworth Theatre, September 9-21. Tony winner Jerry Zaks will direct.
Palminteri, who wrote the show, plays 18 roles in the semi-autobiographical tale about growing up in the Bronx. He first performed A Bronx Tale in small theaters in L.A. in 1989 before bringing it to New York for an Off-Broadway run. An expanded version of the play was turned into a 1993 film starring Palminteri and Robert De Niro, who also directed. Most recently, Palminteri performed the show on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre earlier this season.
Palminteri's stage credits also include the 2002 Off-Broadway production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. He received an Oscar nomination for Bullets Over Broadway; his other film credits include Hurlyburly, The Usual Suspects, and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.
Zaks is a four time Tony Award winner for productions of The House of Blue Leaves, Lend Me a Tenor, Six Degrees of Separation, and Guys and Dolls. He picked up additional Tony nominations for Anything Goes, Smokey Joe's Café, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Following the L.A. engagement, the show will conclude the SHN/Best of Broadway Series with a run at the Golden Gate Theatre, September 23-October 19.
